Mussel Shell Waste
Mussel shell waste is generated from harvesting of mussels in the Marlborough region. The volume of mussels farmed and harvested has increased significantly in the last 30 years (~5000 tonnes in the 1980’s to ~115,000 tonnes in 2010), as indicated in the chart - TOTAL AQUACULTURE PRODUCTION BY KEY SPECIES prepared by Coriolis (2013) for iFAB 2013 Seafood Review – page 18.

Of the total number of mussels harvested in New Zealand, the proportion harvested in the Marlborough region is the highest, ranging between 69% and 70% during 2010 to 2012 (Aquaculture NZ Facts).
